LCDs are among of the most popular modern tools for communication between humans and electronic systems, and an essential component of most interfaces. They give users/operators easy access to information and enable convenient interaction with the software, presentation of information, modifying and verifying settings or signalling the device status. Although alphanumeric LCD modules, which are used as “budget” solutions, play a dominant role in this field of application, it is worth considering alternative solutions, i.e. graphic LCDs – which are available at a similar price, yet offer a much wider range of possibilities.
The solutions presented here are supplied by Displaytech. They feature a large, 128x64 view area composed of controllable monochrome dots (pixels). This gives designers the freedom to present content and makes it possible e.g. to scale the displayed characters, use special characters and language fonts that are unavailable in alphanumeric display character maps and, above all: opens up the possibility to use graphics and icons (pictograms). This caters for the requirements of a multitude of projects and provides a wide range of possibilities to the designer working on the development of a user communication model.
The graphic display modules offered by Displaytech are equipped with PCB leads. The products employ the FSTN positive transflective technology. This makes it easier to read the content, no matter if the display is used in a bright or dark environment. It is possible to use both built-in LED backlight and the reflected light (if operating conditions allow). The ST7565R family driver chip, supported by a range of freeware libraries, allows direct communication with the microcontroller via an 8-bit data bus or a 4-line SPI bus. The built-in RAM further improves the device's performance. The chips are assembled directly on glass (COG, chip-on-glass), making the entire module truly kcompact, and thus facilitating the development of mobile devices.
