The USB C standard is enjoying ever-growing popularity, mainly thanks to its wide range of capabilities. This technology is convenient for users because the connectors are symmetrical, so the plug can be inserted into the socket in two ways (by rotating it 180° around the cable axis). However, the advantage of USB C over other standards goes much further. These connectors are compatible with numerous standards and can transmit data at speeds in the tens of gigabits per second (they can successfully replace HDMI multimedia transmission solutions or even LAN cables). What's more, in the standard they offer, the supply voltage is negotiable – therefore, a compatible charger can supply up to 20V DC (if “requested” by the powered device). The current capabilities of the USB connectors are also impressive, including fast charging of mobile devices, as well as continuous powering of equipment that requires power of up to 100W. In addition, it is worth mentioning that at the end of 2024, USB C will become the European power supply standard for electronic devices (this will be an international requirement). Furthermore, USB 4.0, the latest version of the popular serial bus, will be supported exclusively by USB C connectors.
Fortunately, many manufacturers, including well-established brands, have been marketing universal USB C sockets and plugs for years. These solutions have been designed for high- and low-volume manufacturing of various circuit types – intended for consumer, professional or industrial products. TME has just introduced to its catalogue new USB C connectors – supplied by UK-based Global Connector Technology (GCT). The connectors meet all the requirements of the IEC 62680 standard, as well as high quality requirements. Thanks to the use of gold-plated contacts, the connectors are protected against corrosion and offer a long mechanical life (up to 10,000 mating and unmating cycles). The TME catalogue includes both GCT connectors intended for mounting on the surface of a PCB as well as in a cut-out located in the middle of a PCB (middle board mount), which makes it possible to develop ultra-low profile circuits.
In addition to standard products, the manufacturer's product portfolio also includes connectors with a higher IP rating: IP67 sockets feature an additional seal to ensure protection against water and dust ingress.
