PAN1780 is a Bluetooth 5 Low Energy module developed by Panasonic based on the nRF52840 SoC (System on a Chip) by Nordic Semiconductor. It has been engineered as a wireless communication component for IoT applications in the Smart Home, Smart City market segments (wireless aggregation of data from city sensors), as well as industrial automation (the so-called "Industry 4.0"), e.g. for the control and monitoring of production processes.
In addition to the Bluetooth 5 standard, the module supports communication in 802.15.4 ZigBee and Thread, as well as NFC standards. The module's transmit power is software-configurable (up to 8dBm), which, combined with a sensitivity level of 103dBm, makes it a god choice for projects where long communication range is required (e.g. field-dispersed devices). The PAN1780's low power consumption in sleep mode makes it ideal for (rechargeable) battery-powered devices, such as those recharged by wind turbines or solar panels.
The NRF52840 chip used in the PAN1780 features a Cortex-M4F core, providing users with access to multiple hardware resources – thanks to this, the module can be used in standalone mode, i.e. without an external microcontroller/microprocessor. This translates into simplification of target designs, device miniaturisation and lower manufacturing costs. The microcontroller used here has built-in A/C converters, GPIO ports, as well as hardware support for I2C, SPI, UART, USB interfaces, NFC-A proximity communication and SWD, a 2-wire ARM debugger protocol.
An important feature in terms of data protection is the possibility of updating the module's software using the OTA method (Over The Air), with a high level of security – all that thanks to the protected memory area managed by ARM TrustZone technology.
It should be noted that the manufacturer offers dedicated development kits which will significantly improve the design and prototyping processes for devices based on the PAN1780 module.
